In one of my cars, the OBD port is up in the center console. The only way to see it is to put your head on the accelerator pedal. It's not too hard to feel which way the plug goes. It has a ridge on the short side that you can feel without looking at the connector.

Mine is flush inside a cutout in the bottom panel of the dash so you can't even feel for that

This is proof that USB and OBD2 ports exist in four dimensions. It’d never happen with a bus-and-tag connector.

When we were on our family roadtrip, one of my jobs as navigator was to plug the obd scanner to clear the code every single time we went WOT. I got pretty good at getting it on the first go. Maybe you just need more practice... at highway speed.
